Licenses and Registrations



New residents may use a valid driver’s license from their former state for up to 90 days before obtaining a driver’s license from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. If the former state license has expired, new residents must also pass knowledge and road tests when they apply for a South Carolina license.



New residents of SC have 45 days to transfer vehicle title and registration from their previous state of residency. Complete and mail Form 400 to obtain certificate of title and registration in South Carolina.This form is available at DMV branch offices or

To vote in city, state, and national elections, applicants must be 18 years of age or older, U.S. citizens, and must establish residency.
